I’m Writing A Mafia/outlaw Novel Any Tips?

I’ve always been fascinated by the likes of Dillinger to Capone to Lucky Luciano, i’m studying them as much as possible but could anyone spare me any information or tips on writing these types of books.
For instance i heard the best way to write one of these type of books is from end to beginning and that first person is best. Is that true, and are there any other tips? Thanks 
Oh and my main character is a female outlaw from a mafia family, and this is based in 1930′s during the war on crime do you think she’d be realistic since she’s a girl?

Mafia stories are too often done, though they are usually good, but I dislike how people end up rooting for the bad people (Mafia) and start hating the good people (example: police).
Instead, why don’t you make it about a girl who infiltrates the mafia and helps the police catch them.
But it is your book and if you go with your original idea, I think if done properly, it could be very realistic. Just make sure that you make the girl have some redeeming qualities.

Reading your question put an entirely different idea in my head which I thought was clever: a western with mafia characters. However, after reading further, I see you weren’t thinking along those lines at all. Too bad, I find that much more intriguing. And fun. In any event, good luck to you.
